Malignant Neoplasm Directory
What is a Neoplasm?
A Neoplasm is an abnormal new growth of tissue that grows by cellular proliferation more rapidly than normal, continues to grow after cessation of the stimulus which evoked the change, shows partial or complete lack of structural organization and functional coordination with the normal tissue, and usually forms a distinct mass of tissue. It usually causes a lump or tumor.
The phatological process that results in the formation and growth of a neoplasm is called Neoplasia. A Neoplasm can be:
- Benign: it does not transform into a cancer;
- Potentially Malignant: it does not invade and destroy at the present but, given enough time, it will transform into a cancer;
- Malignant: it invade and destroy the surronding tissue, may form metastates and eventually can kill the host.
- Benign: it does not transform into a cancer;
